Higher Education

Danish higher education institutions use the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) for measuring study activities. Higher education programmes are offered at short-cycle, bachelor, master and PhD level.

Academy profession programmes offer professionally-oriented short-cycle degree programmes, in fields such as business, technology and IT. Combining theoretical studies with a practice-oriented approach in the form of work placements, the programmes prepare students for performing practical, vocational tasks on an analytical basis and can qualify students for employment in middle-management positions.
Professional bachelor’s programmes offers professionally-oriented degree programmes at bachelor level in fields such as business, education, nursing, engineering and maritime transport. The programmes are keenly focused on professional practice and provide students with theoretical knowledge and its application to professions and industries. The programmes are provided primarily by university colleges but also by business academies, universities and maritime institutions.
University programmes are offeres research-based study programmes at all three levels up to PhD level:

In South Denmark we work with the following higher institutions (brief description in alphabetical order):

Business Academy SouthWest

About the organization

Business Academy SouthWest (BASW) is a part of the Danish higher education system. We are similar to Universities of Applied Science and our degrees combine a solid academic foundation with the transferable skills demanded in today’s continuously evolving job market. BASW offers a wide range of higher education programmes that qualify students for many different career opportunities. Academy Profession (AP) and Bachelor’s programmes are available in various fields. We also offer a wide range of courses and programmes within Continuing Professional Development (CPD). At BASW we relate theory to practice through internships, company visits, and real-life cases, and our lecturers use their industry experience to teach theory. We continuously work on developing our teaching, both with and without digital tools. We have campuses in Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Tønder. We have around 4000 full-time and CPD-students. We offer education on EQF level 5 and 6.

Previous and future EU projects

BASW participates in the Erasmus+ mobility programme. We have bilateral agreements with 28 European and 3 non-European partners. We have incoming students in our 4 IT-programmes and outgoing students in most of our programmes.

BASW has also participated in multiple cooperation projects. BASW was project lead on the Eramus+ WISE Offshore project (2020-2023), which focussed on further development and digitalisation of continuing professional development within the offshore wind industry.

BASW was furthermore the project lead on a work package in the Interreg INN2POWER project (2016-2020). The aim of the project was to expand the capacity for innovation and to improve collaboration within the Offshore Wind Industry for SMEs by connecting businesses in the North Sea Region. This happened through improving the knowledge, skills, and availability of qualified staff as well as providing relevant platforms for SMEs to meet and collaborate.

Our interests in future collaborations are manyfold. The geographic proximity to the North Sea means that the focal point of many local businesses and institutions is related to the Offshore Energy Industry and the transition to a green and sustainable future. This involves both commercial, IT, and technical aspects. Moreover, we also have specific interests in tourism, transport & logistics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, design & technology, building construction as well as general aspects of sustainability and green transitioning.

Linking theory and practice is at the heart of everything we do at UCL University College. Every student, in whatever study programme, is given both theoretical and practical insights into the subject studied. Mandatory traineeships, and the opportunity to enter development or research projects with companies and organisations, are among the measures taken to ensure a close connection between students and their future workplaces. To keep up with – and ahead of – developments in institutions, organisations, and industries, we also invite representatives from the different sectors to take an interest in developing our study programmes and courses. We cooperate with educational and research institutions across Denmark and internationally. And we take pride in always making the greatest efforts – working to create better solutions for end users, businesses, and society.

Previous and future EU projects: We cooperate with educational and research institutions across Denmark and internationally. Our ambitions are to develop international skills of both staff and students, ensure that study programmes continuously focus on- and address international aspects. Be part of bilateral and strategic collaborations with several international partners who, like us, have the desire to internationalise enhancing the academic and intercultural competencies of students and staff. In addition, development and start-up of new projects are carried out.

UCL is engaged in several international projects, such as Erasmus KA-1 and KA-2 projects and Interreg- projects, focusing e.g., on digitalisation and automation, sustainability & green transitioning, and innovation & entrepreneurship.
